When it comes to SEO research, while you don’t want it to overwhelm you, the more information you have the better.
And, the faster you can access the information you need, the more time you’ll have to focus on providing your client with the best solution possible.
So, today I’m going to talk about 10 more free SEO-Related tools that will help make your SEO life a little easier.
The following 10 tools include a way to quickly determine the readability of a site’s page content, find out who is linking to your client’s site, how to check if a site is “mobile device ready,” and a quick and easy way to find where different search engines rank for the same keyword:
- Lexical FreenetUse this tool to: generate keyword ideas. How it works: Type in any word, select one of the search options and hit “submit query.”Benefit: This is another great resource to add to your keyword idea-generating tools. It gives you seven different query methods. You can have it output a list of phrases that begin with the word you input … related words that rhyme … words that are spelled similarly … have it find the connection between two words or find words “reachable” between two words.
- Domain Stats ToolUse this tool to: find out various domain name statistics such as its age, its Google page rank, the approximate number of visitors per month, the top ranked keywords, whether the page has been “stumbled upon,” top referrals, Google, Yahoo!, and Bing statistics, etc. (Note: It doesn’t always come back with every information field filled out.)How it works: Enter the domain name you want information on, type in the captcha code (a string of text a site uses to prove you’re human) and hit “submit.”Benefit: This provides you with a pretty good overview of a URL’s current situation. You could use this as a “before snapshot” to show your client how your SEO work has improved their site. Plus, you could use it to find some useful information about your client’s competition.
- NameBoy

Use this tool to: help you come up with the ideal website domain name. How it works: Type in a word you’d like to base your URL around and press “go nameboy go.” It then provides you with a list of potential domain names using that word. You can also type in a secondary word to incorporate into your name search. Plus, you can choose whether or not you want to include hyphens in the name results.
Benefit: If your client is looking to start a new site (perhaps for a standalone sales letter or squeeze page), you could use this tool to help you come up with a domain name. If you’re looking for a domain name for your Money-Making Website, this tool will give you lots of ideas.
- Back Link WatchUse this tool to: find out the quantity and quality of the inbound links to your client’s site. How it works: Type in the URL you want to check and click “Check Backlinks.” Among other things, it tells you the anchor text the site is using to link to your site.Benefit: It’s an easy way to find out who is linking to your client’s site. If part of your SEO campaign is creating back links, you can use this as a “before” snapshot. You could also analyze the competition’s website to check the depth of their back links. This will identify sites that it might be beneficial for your client to exchange links with.
- Text Link Checker ToolUse this tool to: check whether your client’s site is linked to a site that has been penalized by the search engines. This tool identifies sites (such as sites in the adult and pharmaceutical fields) that may possibly be spamming the search engines. How it works: Enter the URL to scan and click “Check URL.”Benefit: The goal of this tool is to assist your client in determining potential problems with their linking strategy. If you determine a site is indeed spamming, you should contact them and ask them to remove their link to your client’s site. For web writers, this is another way to add value to your relationship with your client.
- DomizeUse this tool to: check and see if a domain name is available. It’s also a quick and easy way to check when a URL was registered and when it comes up for renewal. How it works: Type in any combination of letters. On the third letter, it tells you if what you just typed is available as a domain name. For each subsequent letter you type, it does the same thing. Each domain extension is colored red or blue. Blue means it’s available (clicking on it takes you to the GoDaddy site); red means it’s taken (hovering your mouse over it brings up a thumbnail of the site and the registered and expire date of the domain name).Benefit: It’s a quick way to check and see if a domain name is available. Plus, you can check how long your client’s competitors have been online. And, if you own a domain name, it’s an easy way to remind yourself when it needs to be renewed.
- Readability TestUse this tool to: check the readability level of a page. Among other stats, it gives you both the Flesch-Kincaid Grade and Reading Ease Level and the Gunning Fog Index (including a detailed description of each). How it works: Type in the URL and click “Calculate Readability”Benefit: One of the keys to writing online text is making it easy to read. If the readability level is too high, it’s time to do some editing.
- Mobi ReadinessUse this tool to: determine how well a site performs on a mobile device. How it works: Type in the URL of the site and press “GO.”Benefit: Using a mobile device is an increasingly popular way to search the Internet. It’s important that if a prospect or client calls up your client’s site that it’s easy to read. Letting your client know if they have a failing mobile device status will lead to their site having a better overall conversion rate.
- SpyFu

Use this tool to: check the top 10 keywords used in a website’s Pay-Per-Click (PPC) campaign. How it works: Type in a website (or a keyphrase) and press “Search.”
Benefit: SpyFu is designed more to help you with your PPC campaign than your SEO requirements. They offer both a free and a much more powerful subscription-based service. You could plug in a competitor’s website and find out the top 10 keyphrases they’ve placed PPC ads for. This is information you could use to fine-tune your client’s keyword list. With one click, you can see the actual PPC ad they placed. It’s a pretty amazing tool — especially if your client also wants you to write or run a PPC campaign for them.
- ThumbshotsUse this tool to: compare where different search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo!, Altavista) rank the same term. How it works: Input the keyword you want to search (in both places) and select the two search engines you want to compare. You can also input a site you want to highlight in your results.Benefit: If you input your client’s site, you could use this as a “before snapshot” to prove the effectiveness of your SEO work.
Knowing where to find the best tools for the job can really give you an advantage over your SEO colleagues. Plus, the more tools you have in your SEO toolbox, the more confidence you’ll have when you’re dealing with your clients.
